Final Product - Contents Page

This is my final contents page. Like the front cover I have used as many good points as I can from my research I found and used them on this. In my opinion I think both of my products are appropiate for a school magazine.

Music Magazine Double Page Spread Analysis
Text is a bit small so click 'full' above to read it easier...

Music Magazine Contents Page Analysis 3

This is the contents page for 'KERRANG' magazine. In my opinion this is my favourite contents page that I have chosen to analyse. Like the other contents pages this one uses the same idea of splitting the contents up into sections (eg: FEEDBACK, NEWS etc.) and then listing the article featured in the magazine under one of these headings. This I think appeals to readers more than just placing all the articles into one big list. Also headers and page number are black on yellow which contrast and make them stand out on the page.
Like the other contents pages I have analysed most of the page is taken up by pictures. One of the main article in the magazine has the largest picture on the page and again this is good as it relates to the article and if a picture was out there for for one of the least important articles then it wouldn't work as well as this is as people tend to want to read the main articles in the magazine more than the smaller articles put in the magazine.
Unlike the other contents pages small pictures have been put in the page. These pictures relate to other articles that were on the front cover of the magazine. Instead f placing them in the list on the right side of the magazine the page numbers have been placed on the picture. I think this is a good idea as I think it shows that there is a connection between the magazine cover, contents page and the article.
The header for the page is actually rather small and has been placed in the corner. I think this works as most people can clearly see by looking at the page that it is the contents page so having a large header saying contents is unnecessary.

Music Magazine Contents Page Analysis 2

This is a contents page for the Q magazines. Like the NME contents page the contents have been split into sections. There is a 'FEATURES' header. In this section it list articles which were on the front cover and other main articles within the magazine that are new in this months issue. This is a good idea as if a particular article on the front cover caught the readers eye then they could just quickly find the article they were after in this section.
Underneath this they have put in a section for monthly items that appear in the magazine such as emails and the like. Again this could appeal to readers as they wouldn't have to read through the whole of the contents to find what they are looking for.
Like the NME magazine colours which relate back to the logo have been used. The red and the white has been used which help keep a running theme which I think would be more appealing for reads because if the contents page was to use random colours which dont relate to anything then I think it would put people off reading.
Also like the NME magazine a large picture dominate the page. Like I said before this creates a focus point for readers and also relates back to the main article. Putting a picture there for one of the less inportant articles would be useless but putting one there for the main article would make people interested and in my opinion want to find out what the picture/ article is about.

Music Magazine Contents Page Analysis 1

This is the contents page for one of the NME magazines. Some feature I like about this contents page are how the topics for sections in the magazine are made clear (on the right hand side of the magazine) by putting black box's and the text for each topic eg:NEWS, RADAR had been wrote on it in bold letters in white which contrast and makes them stand out from the rest of the small text on the page. Also the mastehead for the contents page is in large bold text which makes it clear and this also can catch the readers eye.
A secondary index (on the left side of the page) had also been out there. This could make it even easier for readers to fin a page hey are looking for.
The picture in the middle of the page is a good idea in my opinion as it creates a focus point for readers and also gives them an idea to what the main article in the magazine will be about.
I like how there is also a running theme for the age and the colours red, black and white are used mostly on the page. As I said this creates a running theme and also relates back to the NME logo.
This contents page had a sort of disorganised feel to it which I think would attract the teenage and maybe younger adults.

Music Magazine Cover Analysis 3

As the people in the photo (MCR) are dressed in dark clothes the background to the magazine has had to be a lighter colour so that the picture stands out against the light background. As 'KERRANG' is a well known magazine they havent minded obstucting the masthead with the picture on the cover. This also creates a focus point on the magazine.
The title to the main article is also in white to make it stand out against the picture and to keep the main theme of red, white and black the sub titles and the quotes are in read to make them stand out againt the background.
Parts that are nothing to do with the main article in the magazine have been put in boxs with other colours like yellow and and grey so that people dont get confussed between the articles. To make it appeal more to teenagers the article looks like it has been put together in parts. Titles for articles are at an angle instead of them being horizontal which can be boring and a band of smaller pictures have been placed at the bottom to try and cathch potential readers eyes.

Music Magazine Cover Analysis 2

In my opinipon I like this magazince cover. I like the use of colour and how they have kept the colours and themes run. the logo for the magazine is red and White. All the main titles for articles within the magazine on the page are red then the sub heading's Quotes and other text are in white. In able to use these colours exspecially white they have had to make a dark back ground. In order to do this they have taken a photo with madonna in black then blended the photo in to the magazines black background. This also makes the main part of the picture (Madonna's face) stand out clearly against the darker colours. This gives the magazine a focus point for potential readers to look at.
To make the magazine look a lot more formal they have used the same style text throughout. I think this makes the magazine appeal to 20 - 40 years olds. Younger peolpe like teenages tend to go for a less organised theme like the NME magazine I have analysised below.
Also to attrract readers they have put a banner promoting that they have a free 70 page special magazine inside. I like the idea of the banner across the magazine as this also makes articles stand out or can be used to attract more readers by promotiing something like this magazine has done.

Music Magazine Cover Analysis 1

This is the NME Music magazine. I Have chosen to analise this magazine because It caught my eye when I first looked at it. The first part of it that interested me is the fact that a majority of the time on a magazine the masthead is the biggest and boldest font on the front cover to help people to see which magazine it is and try and draw people in to the magazine. Athough as you can see on this magazine the title 'NME' is a looks quite small compared to the main headline of te magazine 'Top 50 ALBUMS OF THE YEAR'. This I believe does a better job of drawing people in to read the magazine. Another way of drawing people into the magazine is offering free items with the issue. This also can intise people to buy/read the magazine. I think that another reason NME have decided that they dont need the 'NME' logo to be as big is because most people can recognise an NME magazine when they see one even if the logo was not there which proves just how popular the magazine is.What i also find interesting about the magazine is that the titles for the articles are not all in the same font. Some time magazines can be over powering to look at but in my opinion I think this gives the magazine an original and unique look and I think that it works. I have also noticed that the magazine does not have many pictures and the pictures that are on there are quite small. Even with this though they have managed to use the space wisely with short headlines and comments about the articles inside.

School Magazine Contents page analysis 3

The colours used on this contents page I think are good and qute appropiate as the logo for the school is red and black and the title for the page is in a bold red colour. This can catch the readers eye when flicking through the magazine. The black i think should need changing as it look quite boring and makes the page look dark which I dont think would appeal to a lot of readers.
The pictures used in the back ground of the magazine I think should be changer as some parts that overlap the white in the pictures are hard to read as the text is also white.
Again I like the idea of how articles in the magazine have been split into sections which means that readers will find it easier to find the article they want.
Looking at the magazine I think that it is quite formal as the layout of it is very organised and the colours are bland. I think this would suit older people rather than the university students that it is aimed at.

School Magazine Contents page analysis 2

Looking at this magazine I dont think it looks that professional. The text for the header 'the academy college' doesnt stand out enough although using red against a blue background is a good contrast.

The word 'Contents' also stands out. As you can see the text is outlined with yellow which makes the text clear but if they were to just keep the text black the it would be hard to see it because the picture behind is dark which means that it would blend in.
Each title for the sections of the magazine are in a different colour which i think makes it easier for the reader to see and understand and notice the different sections with in the magazine. The sized font used for the titles for each section are larger that the titles for each article which also makes reading the contents page a lot clearer and easier.

The picture placed on the contents page I dont think should be there. It looks okay but I think smaller pictures that relate to articles in the magazine would be more appropiate. The eges of the picture look rushed almost like it was a last minute decision to place the picture there.

I think that the magazine would be appropiate for most ages although I believe it would be more suitable for younger school pupils.

School Magazine Contents page analysis 1

This contents page I think is the best out of the three I have chosen to write about. I think this because it is quite modern and is how I expect a magazine contents page to be laid out. Each section of the magazine has been split into three headings then the magazine has got all its main headlines in one of these sections. I think this is a good idea as it makes it easier for the readers to find the page they are looking for and this could also save time.

Also down the right side of the magazine they have pictured less important articles that people might be interested in reading.

As this is a contents page for a school magazine I think that this appeals more to the school pupils and maybe the boys as the page clearly has some dark and cold colours to it. This combines with the style font and some of the words and letters being a different colour makes the contents page seem more informal which I think would also appeal more to the pupils of the school other that elder people.

School Magazine front cover analysis 3

Unlike the other school magazines I have analysed I think that this one looks more like an everyday magazine other than a school magazine. I think this because the masthead is more creative than the other ones. Instead of it being blocked in like the others it is on an angle giving it more movement. The colours also change form a darker shade to a lighter shade also giving it more movement making it stand out.

As well as there being smaller images I think that having a larger image on the front makes the magazine look more professional and sets the theme for the magazine. The people on the magazine clearly look happy about something; this I think makes the reader want to find out just what they are happy about. The smaller images on the magazine also have a more positive look to them because the expressions on the people’s faces are all happy. Along with the positive theme they have used slogans on the magazine like ‘Our students accept a challenge’.

The colours of the cover for the magazine are all in the same shade making the magazine look more organised and formal. Looking at the front cover of the magazine I get the impression that this magazine could be read by all ages. Like I’ve said above the magazine looks formal and I think this would appeal to the elder generation like parents of the pupils as well as the pupils themselves.

School Magazine front cover analysis 2

This is Mount Carmel’s magazine cover. At first glance of the magazine it looks quite boring and very formal to be a school magazine cover. But actually studying the cover of the magazine more closely there are some good features to the magazine. I like that the master head is very contrasting. The name of the school is in yellow which is a very bright colour but the background is a black. They have also added a faded affect tot the header of the magazine with gives it movement and makes it look more interesting. This effect also makes the logo stand out more as the logo is made of darker colours on a white background.

Another feature of the magazine that I like is that they have used consistent colours on the page. Colours like Grey, Black and shades of the colours. The only non consistent colour is the yellow although I think this works as the name of the school stands out to readers.

The pictures on the page are all positive pictures to go with the article. The people on the page seem happy and smiling which gives the school a more positive attitude and this also relates back to the article.

Upon analysing the magazine I think that the magazine is more suitable to the older generation or parents of the pupils in the school. Although this school seems to be quite a high class school so the magazine might also be suitable for the pupils.

School Magazine front cover analysis 1

This is the Biddulph High School magazine cover. I have chosen this cover one because I thought it would be interesting to analyse as it is the school I attend and haven’t really took any interest in them before. Looking at the magazine now I think that it has some quite interesting features. The heading of the magazine is at an interesting angle, Instead of it being plain horizontal. Also part of the background is a photo of the school which is also part of the masthead of the magazine. Large pictures on the magazine make it look more interesting to read and help catch potential readers eye. Also to make headings for articles stand out they have made them red and in a different style and sized font to make them stand out against the other writing and the background. In the corner of the magazine the BHS logo is on there. This is a recognisable logo to the school and would stand out against other magazine. Linked in with this the colours of the magazine are the same as the ones used for the school logo which keeps the theme constant. As for the audience for the magazine I think it is suitable as it s aimed at school pupils ranging from the ages of 13 to 18 and also parents of the pupils.

The Biddulph high school magazine does not have a contents page although I believe that it should. Without one people will find it harder to find the article they wish to read.
